2006-7 Season Poster

Nicki Bell is a classical pianist who loves playing chamber music; she started at age five and has continued playing and studying with many extraordinary teachers. Her studies took her to UC Berkeley and SUNY at Stony Brook New York where she was educated in both the fine arts and music. For the past thirty years she has run a private studio in Sebastopol teaching piano while keeping one foot in the visual arts. For a decade she was half of an architectural stained glass studio with commissions scattered all over the country. This experience opened up the world of abstraction for her, which she extended to her collages. Her windows can be viewed at the prudential building in Sebastopol. She can be reached at nbell@sonic.net.

The collage, “Music in Flight” used for the Redwood Arts Council's 2006-2007 season poster is one of a series germinating from a trip to the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. The paper bag housing her purchased music “looked good enough to play and too good to throw away.” So she began to play with it; using ripped sections of that paper bag in the first collage. The series expanded, incorporating handmade decorative Japanese and European papers. Like music, they evolved in dynamics, composition, movement of voices and color. “The collages are my visualization of being part of a chamber music ensemble, the glorious wild ride of an internal rafting trip. The overlay of papers, as with sound in music, becomes a dance of line, color, shape and texture. The tension between balance and off -balance finds resolution as it does in the sublime music performed at the Redwood Arts Council concerts.” Learn more about Nicki Bell's art and music at www.Nicki-Bell.com.
