The Konevets Quartet
“I was seduced by the remarkable
color of the various voices

—Michel Ossorguine

Saturday, February 9, 2008 - 8:15 p.m.
St. Philips Church, Occidental

Trained at the St. Petersburg Music Conservatory in the Russian musical tradition and taking its name from Konevets Island and Monastery on Lake Ladoga just north of St. Petersburg, the quartet’s goal was to establish an a cappella chamber choir with its own distinctive harmonic sound. The group has toured extensively with a repertoire featuring Russian sacred music, eighteenth through twentieth century hymns by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky as well as Russian folk songs. They are themselves masters and resources of the music they perform. Four disembodied voices create notes that seem to emanate from elsewhere. “This small group of young singers will lead us into a space where sound and silence unite.” Peter Brook, Paris.
